Sam Bennett from the Bora Hansgrohe team won the 206 km Turkish Airlines Kumluca-Fethiye stage at the second day of the 53rd Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey. Having completed the stage at 6 hrs 2 min 6 sec, Bennett will be wearing the Turquoise Jersey during the 128 km Spor-Toto Fethiye-Marmaris stage tomorrow.

 Landing on a great success was Ahmet Örken from the Turkish National Team, having kicked off the team with the main group in the eighth place, maintaining the same time difference. The challenging stage started with 101 riders at 11:33 as Mücahit Küçükyılmaz, Head of Corporate Communications at the Presidency, waived the chequered flag. Warmer than the previous stage, the second stage was slightly windy from time to time. Cyclists stayed together during the first kilometers of the stage.

 

THREE CYCLISTS UNABLE TO START DUE TO ACCIDENT

As a result of the accident, which took place yesterday minutes before the Kemer finish, Hector Saez from Caja Rual, Aleksandr Porsev from the Gazprom Rusvelo team and Justin Jules from the WB Veranclassic Aqality Protect team could not race. Therefore the Turkish Airlines Kumluca-Fethiye Stage started with 101 bikers.

 

ONUR BALKAN MAINTAINS THE WHITE JERSEY WITH VESTEL BEAUTIES OF TURKEY PRIME

As riders passed the 43rd km, the first prime gate was left behind. Glorious at the prime, before strong bikers, was once again Onur Balkan from the Turkish National Team, enabled wearing the Beauties of Turkey jersey (White) during the Fethiye – Marmaris team. Second place was Maestri Mirco from the Bardiani CSF team and the third place was Sergei Chersnetski from Astana.  

 

TURKISH AIRLINES CLIMBING PRIME (KING OF THE MOUNTAINS – RED JERSEY)

Maestri Mirco from the Bardiani CSF team was the first one to finish the Turkish Airlines Climbing Prime (King of the Mountains – Red Jersey) at the 59th km while Onur Balkan was ranked in the second place as he was in sprint. Meanwhile, the time difference between the escape group and main group was 3 min 16 sec.

 

ONUR BALKAN IS APPLAUDED ONCE AGAIN

Topping off his performance from the previous stage, Onur Balkan, young star of the Turkish National Team, maintained his spot in the leading group with a strong performance. Leaving the 107th km behind, the riders were led by Onur Balkan, Maestri Mirco from the Bardiani CSF team and Murilo Affonso Ferraz from the Soul Brasil Pro Cycling team. The new time difference of 4 min 8 sec net had the fans applauded Onur. Top three maintained the time difference for a long time. However, it was down to 3 minutes due to climbing hills and headwind until the third prime gate.

 

MIRCO MAESTRI ENTITLED TO WEAR THE RED JERSEY WITH THE SECOND TURKISH AIRLINES CLIMBING PRIME 

First one to pass through the second climbing prime gate was Maestri Mirco from the Bardiani CSF team. Murilo Affonso Ferraz from the Soul Brasil Pro Cycling team was ranked in the second place while Onur Balkan from the Turkish National Team was ranked in the third place. Enrico Barbin from the Bardiani CSF Team who won the climbing prime of the first day handed over the red jersey to his teammate Maestri Mirco. As the riders moved along the Saint Nicholas Church at the 117th km, the new time difference was 2 min 50 sec, meaning that the escape group would be caught by the main group before the final sprint stage at the 159th km, as the new time difference was 2 minutes. At the 124th km, Onur Balkan was passed by the top three and caught in the main group. However Onur was proud to have been completed his mission. 

 

ACCIDENT TAKES PLACE DUE TO PEDALS TOUCHING

As the cyclists entered Kınık, top two riders, namely Maestri Mirco from Bardiani CSF team and Murilo Affonso Ferraz from Soul Brasil Pro Cycling, were expected to slow down, however they picked up the pace despite the headwind. The difference between the lead group continued to top the 2-min threshold while the riders passed the 129th km. Suddenly, a very unexpected accident took place in the main group, involving Marco Frapporti from Androni Sidermec Bottecchia team and Sergei Chernetski from the Astana team and leaving the latter out of the competition due to his injury. Thus, the number of racing bikers fell down to 100. Meanwhile the time difference between the leading group and the main group was reduced down to 1 min 37 sec. Interestingly enough, the top two began to pick up the pace, leading the main group to slow down, thus a time different up to 3 minutes at the end of the 140th km.

 

TURQUOISE JERSEY TO BE WORN BY THE SAME CYCLIST

Having won the yesterday’s stage and wearing the Turquoise jersey (winner of the General Classification), Sam Bennett from the Bora Hansgrohe team chose to preserve his strength by concealing himself in the main group and by slightly picking up the pace.  

 

PUBLIC ATTENTION ON THE ROAD

As the riders approached Fethiye, a large crowd gave them a great welcome. Fans, holding Turkish flags in their hands, cheered up for the riders and further expressed their satisfaction as they saw Turkish bikers in the leading group.

 

MIRCO PASSES THE SALCANO SPRINT PRIME

As the riders completed the 160th km, they passed the final sprint gate of the stage. Maestri Mırco from Bardiani CSF team won the Salcano Sprint prime. Murilo Affonso from the Soul Brasil Pro Cycling team came the second. The leading duo was pedaling to Fethiye with a different pace from the others. The new time difference was declared as 1 min 45 sec at the 168th kilometers

 

AND THE EXPECTED FINISH!

When only 17 km remained to the finish line, the leading duo consumed all the strength and joined the main group, further highlighting the success of Maestri Mirco from Bardiani CSF team and Murilo Affonso from the Soul Brasil Pro Cycling team. Now all eyes were on the great sprinters in the main group. As the riders kicked off the last 10 km, they started to move faster, checking on each other. Wearing the Turquoise jersey, Sam Bennett was in the main group, pedaling calmly towards Fethiye.

And just like yesterday’s finish, Sam Bennett from the Bora Hanssgrohe maintained the Turquoise Jersey, following a spectacular race.
