SAM BENNETT FROM BORA HANSGROHE TEAM KEEPS THE TURQUOISE JERSEY

THE TOUR TO CONTINUE WITH THE 204.1KM SPOR TOTO- MARMARİS - SELÇUK STAGE TOMORROW

Sam Bennett from the Bora Hansgrohe team triumphed the 128.6 km Spor-Toto Fethiye-Marmaris Stage of the 53rd Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey, crossing the finish line at 3 hrs 25 min 25 sec.

Having won the third stage in a row, Bennett is one step closer to win the Turquoise Jersey. Sam Bennett will continue to wear the Turquoise Jersey during the Spor-Toto Marmaris-Selçuk Stage tomorrow.

 

FETHİYE'DEN START 13.30'DA VERİLDİ

99 Cyclists kicked off the 128.6 km Marmaris stage, started in front of Fethiye Municipality building at 13:30. An escape group was formed almost instantaneously after the start. Leading group consisted of Feritcan Samlı from the Turkish National Team and Gregory Daniel from the Trek-Segafredo team. They were followed by Thomas Deruette from WB Veranclassic Aquality Protect team who could only catch up with the leading duo at the 9th km. The stage took place under the burning sun with virtually no wind at all.  The leading trio increased the time difference by up to 2 min 5 sec and 3 min 56 sec respectively. Lincoln Silva from the Soul Brasil Pro Cycling Team tried to catch up with them as the riders were at the 13th km. The main group consisted of 7 bikers from the Turkish National Team and Sam Bennett from the Bora Hansgrohe Team who carried the Turquoise Jersey. Meanwhile the new time difference was 5 min 28 sec. At the 18th km, as Lincoln Silva almost caught the group, his tire went flat. After such unfortunate incident, Silva put an extraordinary effort to catch the escape group, which was 4 minutes ahead of him. 6 min 10 sec was the new time difference between the escape group and main group. At the 24th km, support from the fans in Göçek bolstered the cyclists’ spirit.

 

CYCLISTS WHO ONCE MADE HISTORY IN THIS STAGE

Looking back, this stage marked some of the victorious bikers who reached the highest speed: Daryl Impey (2009), Giovanni VIsconti (2010), Manuel Belletti (2011), Mark Renshaw (2012), André Greipel (2013 & 15), Mark Cavendish (2015), Sacha Modolo (2016), just to name a few. Cycling in the Tour of Turkey, these famous riders also left their mark on the tour with their overall performance. This year’s race witnessed great efforts of Lincoln Silva from the Soul Brasil Pro Cycling Team whose pace eventually droped and he was caught in the main group.

 

RESULTS OF THE TURKISH AIRLINES CLIMBING PRIME (KING OF THE MOUNTAINS)

The 32.9th km marked the first prime gate of the stage. Sponsored by Turkish Airlines, following bikers reached the highest score during the Climbing prime: 1- Thomas Deruette from WB Veranclassic Aquality Protect Team 2- Feritcan Samlı from the Turkish National Team, 3- Gregory Danıel from Trek-Segafredo Team 4- Mirco Maestri from Bardiani CSF Team.

These results confirm that Mirco Maestri who will wear the Red Jersey of the Turkish Airlines Climbing Race (King of the Mountains) during the Spor-Toto Marmaris-Selçuk stage tomorrow.

 

FANS’ GREAT SUPPORT CONTINUES ON DALYAN INTERSECTION

The heat wave struck when the riders left the 50th km behind. Despite the somewhat intolerable heat, the pace was not slow. The difference between the leading group and the main group was 5 min 8 sec. Crowd on Dalyan intersection was promising in this tournament. Waiving the crescent moon-star flags and cheering for the athletes, fans’ great support to the Tour continued. The downhill in Yangı and up to the entrance of Köyceğiz went smoothly. Riders occasionally exceeded 100 km/s. Meanwhile the time gap between the escape group of three riders and the main group started to close. The new time difference was 4 min 10 sec. In the meantime, the main group was pedaling at 45 km/s.

 

FERİTCAN SAMLI WINS THE SALCANO SPRINT PRIME

As the 72nd km of the stage left behind, the Salcano Spring prime took place. Feritcan Samlı from the Turkish National Team won the prime while Thomas Deruette from the WB Veranclassic Aquality Protect Team was ranked in the second place and (    ) in the third place. From the 76th km onwards, we could clearly see the time gap closing down to 2 min 45 sec.

ONUR BALKAN KEEPS THE WHITE JERSEY

Despite the results of today’s stage, Onur Balkan from the Turkish National Team kept Vestel Beauties of Turkey Jersey (White Jersey). Onur will wear the White Jersey tomorrow. Gregory Daniel from Trek-Segafredo Team countered and outperformed the escape group with a time gap of 1 min 6 sec. Three cyclists from the main group countered but they couldn’t go far. 20 km to the finish line, two riders in the escape group were caught by the main group. Leading the riders, Gregory was eventually caught by the main group. Down to the last 10 km, fans expected all riders to arrive the finish line. Concealing himself in the main group down to the last kilometer, Sam Bennett from Bora Hansgrohe team displayed an extraordinary performance in the last 200 m to cross the finish line in the first place.
