53rd Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey, which started on October 10 with Alanya-Kemer stage and 1023 km long in total, ended today. Edward Theuns, from Trek-Segafredo team, won Salcano sponsored and 143.7 km long Istanbul-Istanbul stage with 3h 24m 32sec. Moreover, the champion of the tour became Diego Ulissi from UAE Emirates team with 26h 32min 15sec letting him have the Turquoise Jersey.

 

TROPHIES PRESENTED BY FAHRİ KASIRGA, MINISTER BAK, GENERAL MANAGER BAYKAN, ÖZBAYRAKTAR AND FEDERATION PRESIDENT KÜÇÜKBAKIRCI

53rd Tour of Turkey trophies were presented to their respective owners by Fahri Kasırga General Secretary of Presidency, Osman Aşkın Bak Minister of Youth and Sports, Mehmet Baykan Sports General Manager, İsmail Özbayraktar Spor A.Ş General Manager, Erol Küçükbakırcı Federation President and members of the Board of Directors. The crowd at the Sultanahmet Square, consisting of locals and tourists, showed ample attention to the award ceremony. Cyclists were cheered by the crowd in Istanbul until they arrive the finish line.

 

OWNERS OF OTHER JERSEYS  

Green Salcano Sprint Jersey goes to Bora Hansgrohe, Red Turkish Airlines King of the Mountains Jersey to Mirco Maestri from Bardiani CSF Team, White Vestel Beauties of Turkey Jersey to Onur Balkan from the Turkish National Team. Onur Balkan’s success during the Tour was also rewarding.

 

COURSE OF THE RACE

Stiff competition in General Classification was at the peak point as the stage started. Diego Ulissi from the UEA Emirates Team and Jesper Hansen from the Astana Team had only 12 seconds apart. Ahmet Örken from the Turkish National Team, the runner-up in the previous stage, went up in the classification by two and started the final stage in the 25th place. As the cyclists pedal through Sabiha Gökçen Airport road, the first escape group was formed with Muhammet Atalay from the Turkish National Team, Patryk Stosz from the CCC Sprandi Polkowice Team, Thomas Deruette from the WB Veranclassic Aquality Protect Team and Paolo Sımıon from the Bardiani CSF Team. Later, Affonso Ferraz Murilo from the Soul Brasil Pro Cycling Team tried to join this group. The time difference between the escape group and main group was 1 min 53 sec and the difference between the escape group and Affonso was 51 seconds.

 

DURETTE WINS THE TURKISH AIRLINES CLIMBING PRIME BUT THE RED JERSEY WENT TO MIRCO

At the 25.2nd km, Red Jersey Prime (King of the Mountains) sponsored by Turkish Airlines tool place and the first one pass through the prime was Thomas Deurette from the WB Veranclassic Aquality Protect team. He was followed by Paolo Simion from the Bardiani CSF Team. As a result, Mirco Maestri from Bardiani CSF Team won the ultimate Red Jersey.

 

MUHAMMED ATALAY WINS THE VESTEL BEAUTIES OF TURKEY PRIME MUHAMMED ATALAY BUT ONUR BALKAN WINS THE WHITE JERSEY

Vestel Beauties of Turkey (White Jersey) prime took place at the 54.6th km with Muhammet Atalay from the Turkish National Team being first one to pass through the gate. He was followed by Thomas Deurette from the WB Veranclassis Aquality Protect Team and Patryk Stosz from the CCC Sprandi Polkowıce Team. In this prime, the result was set before the stage, leading Onur Balkan’s win of the White Jersey. Leaving the prime gate behind, the leading quartet was 1 min 25 sec ahead of the main group. 25 km away from the finish line, the escape group left the Topkapı intersection, maintaining the 1 min 21 sec time difference from the main group.

 

PAOLO WINS THE SALCANO SPRINT PRIME

EDWARD THENUS ENTITLED TO GREEN JERSEY

14 km down to the finish line, the final sprint prime of the stage, sponsored by Salcano, took place with Paolo Simioni from the Bardiani CSF team being first one to pass through the prime. Sam Bennett from the Bora Hansgrohe team fell down, 200m away from the finish, leaving the Green Jersey to Edward Thenus from the Trek Team. From the second kilometer to the finish, Muhammed Atalay from the Turkish National Team remained among the four riders in the escape group and acclaimed by his performance. Cyclists started to pedal together during the last 3.7 km of the stage.

 

ACCIDENT TAKES PLACE AT THE LAST 2 KM

SAM BENNET FALSS 200 M AWAY FROM THE FINISH

2 km down to the finish line witnessed another accident with two cyclists being injured. A group of 20 bikers arrived the finish while, quite unexpectedly, Sam Bennett who was entitled to the Green Jersey, couldn’t take the last turn and fell down his bike. But he managed to cross the finish line. Edward Thenus from the Trek Team won the stage.

 

UCI RACE DIRECTOR THANKS THE ORGANIZERS

Roland Hofer, UCI Race Director of the 53rd Tour of Turkey, delivered a brief speech at the end of Istanbul-Istanbul stage, thanking the Federation and Organizers, referees, volunteers, Motorcycle Group, Doctors, Paramedics, Members of the Media, Security Personnel and all those whose dedication and hard work made this event possible. He concluded: “See you next year TURKEY!”
